Challenge
A media contract aggregator, which reads every broadcast contract uploaded to the Communication Commission Public File website, is recognized as a unique and efficient tool because there is no other similar dataset in existence. The dataset currently contains over 400,000 station contracts from more than 8,000 advertisers with the total amount more than $6 billion.
The strength of this software is the ability to analyze and compare rates by different indicators, such as time period, station, advertiser and even advertiser’s type. There is no other tool that provides such detailed data in all 210 multimedia markets.
Initially, the data was presented in the form of an interactive dashboard developed in Tableau. However, that approach could not handle a big number of simultaneous users for performance reasons.
Solution
Our team built a web interface to support a larger number of users. We implemented the Interface as a new standalone web application using Java as a server-side language.
Using the web tool, the users now have the ability to:
- Access real-time detailed data with the click of a button;
- Export data to excel or have customized reports created. The fields include the information on advertiser, agency, state, market, station, spot length, rates, total dollars, number of spots, and much more;
- Track political advertising spending;
- Estimate the political advertising revenue;
- See what rates the advertisers are paying to the various stations in a market;
- Use historical rates to help determine future trends;
- Keep track of ad rates for each network;
- Enhance negotiating power;
- Create deeper sets of analysis;
- Quickly spot the trends and validate the pricing structure.
